Z is for ???

Well, it is here.  The final letter and final post for this month's challenge.  Another year down.  But we can relive the magic that was April in the forthcoming reflections post.  For now, it's all about the "Z"!  On with the post.

Nope, I'm not missing something.  I don't have a show for "Z".  Sure, there are some out there.  A painfully small amount, but they are there.  However, I have not seen any of them.  Heard of them?  Yes, but that's it.  Do you have a TV show that begins with the letter "Z"?  I don't.

Maybe it's Zoe, Duncan, Jack and Jane?  Never saw it.  It was only around for 2 seasons, totaling 26 episodes.

Maybe Zoey 101?  A Nickelodeon show that was moderately successful with tweens far before I had children.  But it's probably more well known now because Jamie Lynn Spears (Yes, Britney's sister) was the title character and star until she got pregnant at the age of 16 and the show was cancelled.

Maybe Zorro?  The original from the 1950's or one of its many reincarnations?  You know who Zorro is right?  I do, but was never interested.  Meh.

So, that's all I have.  Can't end the month with a bang.  But that's the case with the letter "Z".  I figured I would not find a show beginning with the letter when I chose the theme but I tried.  Oh well.  We will see what "Z" has in store next year!

Y is for You Can't Do That On Television

Ok, off the heels of yesterday's lukewarm post I am totally stoked about this one.  This show is a bit more obscure so I will forgive you if you are not familiar with it.  Maybe I can persuade you?!

This show is hilarious.  Basically it is a preteen SNL.  A sketch comedy of sorts where all of the actors are teens, so you have that kind of fun humor.  Oh, and it was the 80's so think about all of the hair and clothes.  Oh, and they're mainly all Canadian so you get the fun accents too!  Sounds like a winner, right?  I can't even begin to tell you where you might find episodes.  Maybe YouTube?  Probably.  They were also known for the running gag of sliming the kids with a green, gooey substance whenever they said "I don't know".  Sure there are now reports from the former child stars that the slime was toxic and has had negative long-term effects on their health, but back then it was hilarious.  Well, it still is for me.  

The show is also known for the fact that Alanis Morissette was one of the child actors.  In fact, many of the actors went on to be somewhat well known, well maybe more so in Canada.  Either way it was a great show and if you grew up in the 80's and watched Nickelodeon then I am sure you are familiar with it.  If you have no clue what I am talking about, be sure to head to this website to learn more!  Go ahead and go there now.  I'm done here!

X is for The X Files

Ok.  Honestly, not one of my all-time favorite shows.  But surely you can understand the lack of TV shows beginning with the letter "X".  So, here we are.

Even if you have never seen an episode you can't deny the phenomenon that was The X-Files.  It was groundbreaking, legendary.  When I think back to the show my favorites were the ones about aliens, unsolved mysteries, bizarre occurrences.  The political and governmental story lines were not among my favorites.  I was never too attached to the show but I have a feeling that if I were to start watching it now, as an adult, from the beginning I would develop a new appreciation for it.  Maybe I will one day.  I mean the truth, and the episodes themselves, is out there.  :)  So I guess I will add it to my TV show bucket list, not high up, but on there nonetheless.

What about you?  Enjoy aliens and those plots?  Yes, no?  Remember The X-Files?  Fondly or not at all?  Like I said, not being overly attached to this show the post is short.  Oh well.

W is for The Walking Dead

Ok. So I have been waiting to write about this show since I thought of the theme for this year's challenge.  I am so excited!  For me, "W" couldn't have been for anything else!

So you know I love scary movies, TV shows, and books. Well, zombies might be my favorite monster. The undead, wandering around, decaying, wanting only to eat my braaaaiiins!  Awesome. Ok, so the zombies (walkers) in The Walking Dead don't say "braaaaiiins" or anything else, but the gurgling/breathing/guttural noises they make are better. There's also something fascinating about a post-apocalyptic world too. No electricity, running water, or any of huge other modern conveniences that we rely upon. Then factor in the fight for your life against the undead. Mesmerizing. 

In addition to the horror factor, this show is also a fascinating look at human nature and what happens when societal norms and government are no more. Deep huh?  I don't see how you couldn't at least know about this show, even if you haven't ever seen it.  And, if you haven't ever seen it, well I can't understand that either.

In breaking with what has become the norm here, I actually am all caught up and current with this show. I love it that much. Thanks in part to my wonderful wife for letting me watch the season finale live and for On Demand for ensuring the episodes are available at all times!  I cannot wait until October when it returns. Until then I will just wait and wait and wait. Oh and read the entire series of graphic novels which I am also obsessed with!

V is for V

The original.  Not the 2009 revamp.  That one was alright (admittedly though I didn't watch it after the premiere, maybe it's on Netflix?) but this is about the one from the 80's!

Loved it!  Doesn't every little child enjoy a good show about aliens disguised as humans, posing as friendly while secretly plotting a hostile takeover of Earth?  Well, I did.  Sure I was young, but clearly mature and advanced for my age!  :)  Well, at least I enjoyed a good scary movie and/or sci-fi.  It has been so long since I have seen this, but I do remember it and loving it.  Scary reptilian aliens in human suits?  Creepy and awesome!  I don't think anyone else in Drosche Land will share my love of this show, but that is alright.  Maybe one day they will come around.  Until then I remember and now begin the search for it on Netflix.  I think I may even have the original TV movie/pilot on VHS (yikes, a VHS dates me!)!

U is for Ugly Betty

The letter "U" is not a common one when it comes to TV show titles, let me tell you that.  Lucky for me there just happened to be one that I watched and enjoyed.  If it weren't for Betty and her wacky exploits I don't know what I'd be talking about now?

An American telenovella?  Sounds awesome.  I mean, I'll admit that I have never actually seen a real one, other than in passing as I flip channels that is.  But I know the premise.  Drama.  Over the top story lines and characters.  Like a soap opera on steroids.  Score.  I got hooked on Ugly Betty via Netlflix, of course, and fell in love.  Then through the wonder of DVR I was able to stay up to date with the series for the final 2 seasons.  I found the outlandish plots and characters to be entertaining and part of what made this show so enjoyable.  That and America Ferrera, she was hilarious and perfect as sweet, dorky, Betty.  I wasn't totally thrilled with how the series ended, but eh, I'll get over it.

So, did you watch Ugly Betty?  What did you think?  Writing this has made me want to pull it up on Netlfix and relive the series.  Ahhhhh streaming video, how you've enhanced TV watching and my life!

T is for The Twilight Zone

Ok. This one is a classic. A classic. However I do understand that many people probably haven't seen it since it is so very old. But still, a classic!

A different story every week. Creepy. Supernatural. Mystery. Twists and turns.  Abnormal and normal switched. So many great themes and episodes here. I don't even know where to begin. The best part is, they are all in black and white. Sure, you might think that it ages the show and dates it. But you'd be wrong. I think that the black and white aspect only enhance the feelings and undertones of the show.  Colorization would take so much away from it, I am so glad Ted Turner hasn't gotten ahold of this series. 

Ok, again, I'll admit that many of you probably are unfamiliar with this show. You might know it by name, but that's it. Some of my favorite memories from childhood are with this show. My Dad loved it and I remember watching it with him. I also remember watching the New Years Eve marathon of it every year. Hour after hour of great episodes for nearly 2 days straight. They still do this, I think it's on the SyFy Channel. Luckily you can still find this show on cable every now and then. I highly recommend you give it a shot. It is epic, groundbreaking, amazing. Again, a classic.  Find it now and watch a few episodes.
